Sinus Lifts

If you’re considering Dental Implants in the upper back jaw, a Sinus Lift may be a necessary first step. At Oral Surgery of Fredericksburg, our skilled surgeons perform sinus lift procedures to safely and effectively increase bone height, creating a stable foundation for long-lasting implant success.

Overview

Why Sinus Lifts matter

The upper jaw, particularly in the molar and premolar area, often lacks the bone height needed to support Dental Implants. This may be due to natural anatomy, bone loss from missing teeth, or proximity to the maxillary sinuses. A Sinus Lift—also called Sinus Augmentation—adds bone beneath the sinus membrane to allow for successful implant placement.

Common reasons for a Sinus Lift

You may be a candidate for a Sinus Lift if:
  • You have insufficient bone height in the upper jaw
  • Your sinuses are too close to the implant site
  • Bone loss has occurred due to periodontal disease or tooth loss
  • You’ve been told you’re not eligible for Dental Implants without additional bone support

This procedure increases the amount of bone in the posterior upper jaw, making Dental Implants possible where they otherwise wouldn’t be.

From prep to recovery, you’re in good hands.

What to expect
Comprehensive evaluation
Before the procedure, our team will perform advanced imaging—such as 3D scans or X-Rays—to assess your sinus anatomy and bone structure. We’ll use this information to create a customized treatment plan.
Surgical procedure
During the Sinus Lift, a small opening is made in the bone, and the sinus membrane is gently lifted upward. Bone Graft material is placed in the space below the sinus to promote new bone growth. The procedure is performed under Local Anesthesia, with Sedation available for your comfort.
Healing and integration
The grafted bone will take several months to integrate with your natural bone—typically 4 to 6 months. This creates a solid, stable base for implant placement. We’ll monitor your progress through follow-up appointments and imaging.
Dental Implant placement
Once the area has fully healed and enough bone is present, your surgeon will coordinate the placement of your Dental Implant. In some cases, a Sinus Lift and implant can be done during the same appointment, depending on the bone quantity.

If you’ve been told you don’t have enough bone for implants, a Sinus Lift may be the solution. Contact Oral Surgery of Fredericksburg to schedule a consultation and explore your options.

The procedure is performed under Local Anesthesia, and Sedation is available if needed. Most patients report mild soreness afterward, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
Healing typically takes 4 to 6 months. This allows the Bone Graft to fully integrate before placing a dental implant.
Sinus Lifts have a high success rate when performed by experienced surgeons and followed by proper post-operative care.
In some cases, yes—if there’s enough existing bone. Otherwise, the implant is placed after healing is complete.
We use biocompatible bone graft materials, which may include synthetic, donor, or bovine sources, depending on your specific needs and preferences.
No. The sinus membrane is gently lifted, not removed, and typically heals without long-term issues. We’ll guide you through proper aftercare to minimize any risks.
